Jesus came to solve a problem, a spiritual problem. More specifically, OUR spiritual problem. But like many people today, Nicodemus was unaware that he had a problem. In his own estimation, he was a good, morally religious man. What could be his problem?
But Jesus knew something that Nicodemus did not know. Jesus knew Nicodemus had a problem that was keeping him from knowing God deeply and personally.
Read the story about Nicodemus’ encounter with Jesus in John 3:2-17.
Nicodemus came to Jesus at night – in secret. He had questions for Jesus. He heard stories and wanted to know if Jesus was the real thing. And sometimes we may wonder the same thing. Does faith really make sense? We may doubt. We are often uncertain.
When Jesus spoke to Nicodemus, He cut straight to the heart of the problem. With all his morality and religion, Nicodemus was a sinful man who desperately needed to start over. He was a man who needed to be changed from the inside out.
The Good News about Jesus becomes really GOOD only when we acknowledge that we have a spiritual heart disease called SIN. Someone once said that when you spell the word /sin, /the letter “I” is in the middle. And when I sin against God, it’s all about what I want, what I think I need, and what I desire. Pleasing myself takes the place of pleasing God. This sin problem beats in the heart of every person.
Tomorrow, we will lock into God’s solution to our sin problem. But I want to encourage you to think about this question, “Just how have I experienced the effects of sin in my own life?”
I would personally answer that question with the words: Disobedience, fear (letting fear control me), selfishness. The Lord and I know a lot more specifics when it comes to these issues. I am so thankful for His forgiveness and His power to change!!
Love you guys!
