The Journey – Week 12 – Session 3

The bad news of the Bible is that we have a sickness of the soul called sin. This sickness condemns us to eternal hell – separation from God forever.
But the good news of the Bible is that God stepped in to solve our problem and to bring us into relationship with Himself. He did this by sending Jesus to us and presenting Jesus on the cross as a payment for our sin.
Read these words from Isaiah 53:4-6 carefully:
“Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; But we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; Punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds. We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; And the Lord has punished Him for the iniquity of us all.”
This is God’s solution to our problem – Jesus died as the full and final payment for our sin. God chose to put our sin on Jesus – Jesus dying as our substitute. On the cross, God poured out His wrath toward sin on Jesus! And Jesus suffered in our place!!
Incredible, isn’t it!?
Jesus’ death on the cross isn’t the full story. Jesus physically rose from the dead. And that is why Jesus is worth following, because no one else has done what He did. No one else paid our penalty for sin, dying on the cross and rising again from the dead.
Jesus stands head and shoulders above any other religious leader in history. All other religions in some capacity are based on the works and efforts of the individual. Salvation, forgiveness, and reconciliation are dependent on my performance – what I do.
In stark contrast, Christianity is based on what has already been DONE! It is all about what Jesus has DONE for us. Only Jesus opens the way for us to be right with God!
What a privilege to follow Jesus to express love and gratitude for all that He has done for us!!
