Just a couple of reminders about tomorrow at Iola Missionary Baptist Church – before we share some thoughts on discipleship.
At 11 AM, during our Morning Worship Service, we will be sharing on “Standing for God Publicly,” from Daniel, chapter 6. Amazing stuff is in this chapter. This is the famous story of Daniel being rescued through the lion’s den – for many of us, a story from our childhood days – but certainly not a childish story! This is a powerful story about standing for God and seeing God give honor to that kind of commitment.
Also, make plans now to stay after the morning worship service for a chicken spaghetti luncheon – as you feel led by the Lord, leave a special offering at the luncheon to help our young people attend Mission 58 Camp this coming summer.
As we have seen this week, growth is a critical element of life as a disciple of Jesus. There is really no such thing as a stagnant follower of Christ – we are either growing closer to Him or fading further away.
Although we are contributing effort and priority to our discipleship, it is great news to realize that our spiritual growth doesn’t entirely depend on us. Our growth depends entirely on God’s work in our lives through His Spirit inside us. Yes, we have the responsibility to obey God and carry out His work each day. But when it comes to our spiritual health and growth, we are like grapes resting on the vine:
“I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can no nothing without Me … As the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you. Remain in My love. If you keep my commands you will remain in My love … I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete” (John 15:5-13).
Respond to this question as you feel led to do so – What steps can you take to let go of “full responsibility” for your growth and focus more fully on “remaining” in God’s presence as the Vine?
Love you guys!
